Head-on Collisions in the News
Click Orlando recently reported a serious accident. Police reports indicate that the crash occurred when a woman was driving her son and two other boys to school, southbound on Oceanshore Boulevard. Another driver traveling on northbound Oceanshore was forced to slam on his brakes to avoid hitting the back of the vehicle in front of him. What happened next is still under investigation. The second driver apparently lost control of his vehicle, and it skidded into the southbound lanes causing a head-on collision with the woman and her 3 passengers. There were multiple injuries reported. All three of the students were taken to Halifax Hospital, one of which was transported as a trauma alert for a serious head injury sustained in the accident.
Head-on Collision Statistics
According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, passenger deaths in head-on collisions occur four times as often in a passenger car than a light truck. A passenger car is defined as a car that weighs less than 10,000 lbs. When a passenger car is involved in an accident with a larger vehicle, the driver is more likely to die if the collision occurred in the front of the passenger car. There were 1,092 fatalities from head-on collisions in passenger cars in 2010. However, Rollover passenger vehicle crashes account for one-third of fatal crashes making them the most deadly form of a car accident.
